Colleges have secrerts too

Well…

This scares me just a little bit, today I was reading an article featured on the statesman.com http://www.statesman.com/search/content/news/stories/local/2009/09/19/0919campuscrime.html. Which as concludes, that Texas colleges do not report most of the crimes that happen at their campus’s or  around it . Meaning that many of us didn’t know that a fellow ACC peer of ours was stabbed in 2006 by the campus, where she attended school (Rio Grande campus). Shouldn’t this send red flags in your mind what else could the colleges be hiding from us(hmm maybe that all the money your parents are paying is not really going towards your education)?!

Its disturbing to think that on top of all of the other things we have to worry about. We have to worry about getting harmed at school, but could there be hope for us after all? Well there is a federal law known as the Clery Act requires postsecondary institutions to shine a light on crime and security issues. They must maintain a daily crime log open to inspection by anyone and update it within two days of learning about an incident. Schools also must produce an annual security report with crime data and descriptions of everything from their efforts to prevent sex offenses to programs that focus on alcohol abuse. While some campus’s are not required for information about the crime are committed do not go online for the public to see (hmm maybe future students who are considering the school.)

They are required to follow other standard rules…While the University of Texas sends out daily e-mails on campus crime, the most current summary of annual crime statistics available online is from 2007 this is a scary thought. In fact according to the article.

In a report last year, the state auditor's office concluded that 17 of the state's 35 public universities did not include all the required information in their annual security reports. Two schools did not produce the reports at all. And two of six universities whose daily crime logs were examined by the office did not track the date and time of crimes and the disposition of complaints as required.

Now while many people this this isn’t a big deal, think again this is a huge deal when your parents send you off to school, they expect you to come home in one piece, alive and breathing. They don’t want a call informing them that they’re child, they thought they sent to a safe place was harmed in a life threatening way. So when viewing a 4 year university to transfer too. Don’t be afraid to ask some questions about the crime rate and the violence against students, because honestly when you get your degree, I’ am pretty sure you want to be alive to put it to some good use.

Who let these sublime?

Stuck in a state known for being traditional and stuck in keeping things in order. Austin has decided to take a step towards giving equality to everyone even same sex couples. Austin has decided to expand the benefits to the same sex partners of city employees. This decision was based off The partner of Spelman’s( a city council member) former employee raised the issue with Spelman after his partner, who was still a City employee, passed away. When his partner attempted to access COBRA benefits, he discovered he was ineligible. This is the first known instance of a same-sex domestic partner requiring COBRA benefits and being denied because of federal rules. While some people are overjoyed at the sudden equality some people find that its only a baby step on the fight for getting equal rights for same sex couples. Some Austin taxpayers are not so keen on giving more of their hard earned money to the same sex partners of the city employees.

Whatever the issue is around the state of Texas. Everyone can agree on one thing. If Austin Texas can be fair to same sex couples then when will Texas remove themselves from the straight traditional ways of the past and move forward toward the new generation? Is it true that the older generation will have to die out before anything nice is done for the non straights?

Another issue that is arising is why should suddenly the same sex partners be allowed to reap the benefits. Well think about it, everyone pays taxes even the same sex couples. why shouldn’t they get, the full benefits that the government offers to the couples that feature two people from the opposite sex, but whatever the issue people have with this I applaud Austin for taking a step forward and giving everyone the equality that they deserve.

The true form of overstaying a welcome

Today I came across a very interesting argument featured on http://gritsforbreakfast.blogspot.com/2009/10/pretrial-defendants-not-convicted.html. . In Howard county (a county in Texas) there seems to be a bit of an overcrowding problem as the author mention the problem not rests in the hands of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the author argues how it is a bit tiring to hear of the same problem that coexist in many places in Texas. The author also argues how these problems can be fixed with minimum effort and granted I do actual agree with everything this author says this problem in Texas has been going on for years. In all county’s across citizens are being forced to fork extra money to pay for criminals that are being held over the time limit they were suppose locked up in county jail in the argument the author featured a small clipping from a local newspaper showing the distress that the local sheriff felt for having to care for so many criminals not only their safety but the health and dangerous risk that can happen during overcrowding. Like the author hinted great things can be accomplished when someone just puts effort into it.

ACL is for losers....

So everyone knows about the ACL festival this weekend. Since everyone and their mom in this summer heard about it everywhere imaginable. So I was reading this opinion piece http://www.statesman.com/opinion/content/editorial/stories/2009/10/02/1002acl_edit.html.

And it got to me because I was one of the fans who enjoyed the great variety of music that the ACL had. All though I did skip Saturday due to the fact that I was not willing to stand in rain. Does that not make me a die-hard fan for not wanting to stand for the music? And another issue that the writer was the dreaded recession for months everything that has been going on in the music has been blamed on the big bad recession. As noticed the recession put no damper on the ACL it was. The broke young college students (or newly college graduates) scraped up enough money to score the chance of a lifetime to witness an event that in years to come will probably become a Woodstock to our generation.

Another thing that the writer points out is the people that Austin brings because of the many music festivals it has, I first hand have seen the effects the music of Austin has had on people as a girl who’s high school was invaded by California kids who were forced to move here by their parents, they constantly complained about how boring Texas was until they experience the thrill of Austin and its weirdness. When that happen suddenly Texas had become the best place ever. Like the writer said Austin is a great retirement city… for young people.

Drugs for sell?

I chose the article "Juárez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz: U.S. drug policies need to change" which is featured on elpasotimes.com. the article explains how the mayor of el paso thinks that the U.S government needs to be stricte onr its drug policies. In fact in the article Reyes states "The policy in Mexico is to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the United States, and that has caused a lot of people to be killed," Reyes said of the 3,200 homicides in Juárez since January 2008. "From politicians to innocent people to police officers, they have all died trying to stop the flow of drugs into the United States." The poilcies that have had for the last 40 years have done nothing to lessen the demand of illgeal drugs.
I think this article is imporant because every day millions of people die from these drugs if the US becomes stricter on its poilcies then less people can die, mexico's war on drugs can be stopped, in fact it is well known that most of the drugs that are involved in the mexican war on drugs are transported illgeally to the US and into the streets were innocent people get addicted to these drugs and most turn into a life of crime to maitain their "fix" if the U.S tightened their policies then the meixan war on drugs can be weakend and less citizens in meixco will die also.
